There are a lot of ordinary and intimate details we could get absorbed in in daily life, and art creation helps us focus on these details. Yet at the same time we could be overwhelmed by the enormous details. I am not strong enough to constantly bear all this, so I just leave and stay from time to time. And perhaps my home happens to be near an optimal point for me, too. Nothing could be too vivid and strong. I just comfortably leave and come back.

about the artist…
At the moment, Wong tends not to think too much but to intuitively create, treating creative processes like a kind of physical exercise, to sweat a little bit from time to time. In a way she thinks art creation does help her to live with a stronger sense of being. Yet, she still hopes to place living in a higher priority to creation. In some scenarios, she would prefer to put art creation aside, and try to first live properly as a being. Wong received her Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Creative Media from the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong.

on home-making…
Home for me has to do with time, not a concrete time, but a lapse that allows building up affective memories.
Memories related to spaces, people and objects, integrated into your private sphere, that affect you and allow themselves to be affected by you.
Home is an imaginary dimension deeply linked to the real.

Wong Chung-yan

on home-making…
There’s a need for videography to show the two kinds of phantoms of what’s being seen and thought of, turning the tangible reality back to its abstract sensory connections.
Readers spontaneously fill in the void between connections, allowing for splits and pauses, letting people drift into their own imagination.

about the artist…
Wong’s works focus on daily recordings in multiple methods. Inspired by the structure of the poetry, she finds fascination in exploring the juxtaposition of images and sounds in a way that presents sensory experiences of places and thoughts. Through documenting and editing daily scenes, she looks deeply into trifling thoughts. Wong’s recent works often take shape as installations, experimental videos and film photography. She is currently studying at the School of Creative Media at City University of Hong Kong.

Linda C.H. Lai

on home-making…
On the interior of the bourgeois home, Walter Benjamin comments, “For the private person, living space becomes…antithetical to the place of work.” In shaping his private environment, the private citizen participates in history; s/he “gathers remote places and the past.” My video essay articulates my urge for intimate connections with just such a space – the house in Las Palmas where my husband grew up. What could an outsider like me understand? What’s accessible is the furniture and ornaments, which my camera captures, highlighting the process of seeing yet not seeing, and the impossibility to understand. As for my parents’ home, of which I was once an insider, I notice Mom’s quiet everyday creativity permeating the tiny space of a flat in public housing, asserting her subjectivity through objects imbued with her intentions. Whether the house and the flat, we all proceed toward death. They have spent their whole life embellishing their homes, but eventually they have departed/will depart one by one, leaving behind an uninhabited living space marked by their personality. But the departed live on, in the form of the material imprints that speak of their own ways of participating in history. Through creative work, I preserve the process of tracing the traces of those living and once lived.

Brian Chu

on home-making…
Years after years of repetitive life turns people numb towards situations. Sensibilities fade. Auditory sense is unconsciously muted and shut out. What remains in your brain are the mumbling thoughts and emotions, rapid and intense visual impacts from the city, perseverance and failure within relationships.

about the artist…

龢 (“Wo” pronounced with the fourth accent in the Cantonese language) is a word that originally signifies the euphony that results from the sound of several bamboo reed flutes playing at once, and connotes harmony. Having assumed this name, Brian hopes that a resonance and a rapport can be established lying between contemplation, emotion, and the many-layered frequencies of reverberant sound, all of these entering into an interplay with one another and negotiating ephemeral forms of balance.
